Driving sustainable fisheries through science, education, and community empowerment

Dr. Samuel Kweku Konney Amponsah is a fisheries scientist with a PhD in Fisheries Science and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Ghana. He teaches a wide range of fisheries-related topics, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to advance sustainable aquatic resource management.
His career extends beyond academia into community service and consultancy at local, regional, national, and international levels. Dr. Amponsah has led fisheries impact assessments, conducted inland and marine fish stock assessment, and undertaken food safety research on smoked fish processed with chorkor and ahotor ovens. He has also investigated critical social issues among fisherfolk communities, including drowning risks, transactional relationships (“sex for fish”), record keeping, the role of women in fisheries, and the dynamics of migrant fishers.
Dr. Amponsah has played a central role in technology and infrastructure development, assisting in the design of fish smoking kilns and supporting the establishment of a Grade A fish processing and handling facility in Ghana. As a researcher, he has co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications with seasoned experts, contributing to global knowledge on fisheries science, governance, and sustainability.
His work bridges science, teaching, and community engagement, with a vision to strengthen fisheries governance, empower local communities, and ensure that fisheries contribute to food security, gender equity, and sustainable development across Ghana and beyond.
